What is sugar ?
The white stuff we know as sugar is sucrose, a molecule composed of 12 atoms of carbon, 22 atoms of hydrogen, and 11 atoms of oxygen (C12H22O11). Like all compounds made from these three elements, It is a carbohydrate. What are the main ingredients in it? What can it do to the body? Eating too much it can contribute to people having too many calories, which can lead to weight gain. Being overweight increases your risk of health problems such as heart disease, some cancers and type 2 diabetes.
Where does it come from? The common ‘sugar’ (sucrose) used is made up from glucose and fructose and is extracted from cane or beet. cane is grown in tropical and sub-tropical parts of the world, including South Africa, Brazil, India, Mauritius and the West Indies.
Sucrose is the most common type of sugar. Often called “table sugar,” it’s a naturally occurring carbohydrate found in many fruits and plants. Table one is usually extracted from cane or beets. It consists of 50% glucose and 50% fructose, bound together.
