Description
Soybean meal
What is in soybean meal?
Soybean meal is the by-product of the extraction of soybean oil. Several processes exist, resulting in different products. It is usually classified for marketing by its crude protein content. High-protein types are obtained from dehulled seeds and contain 47-49% protein and 3% crude fibre (as fed basis).
Is it the same as soy flour?
Soybean flour is a powder made from ground, roasted soybeans. It is a by-product of soy oil production, after the oil has been extracted from the soybeans, what is left is the meal, which is then ground to create the flour.
What does it do for chickens?
This held the best prom- ise of supplying the high quality protein required for rapid and efficient growth in chicks. Progress in the use of it as a protein supplement was reviewed by Hayward, Halpin, Holmes, Bohstedt, and Hart (1937)
